Be safe, be seen

Reflective vestIt's really important to make sure you cycle safely and that you can be seen by other road users, whether it is day or night.

During the daytime wear light coloured clothes and fluorescent items, while at night deck both yourself and your bike out with reflective items. This extra visibility can give a driver those few extra seconds to react.

If you are cycling at night you must have a working white front light, red back light and reflector on your bike. Keep all lights and reflectors clean and clear of obstruction.

Apart from the safety risks, it is a legal offence to cycle at night without lights and reflectors.

Don’t take unnecessary chances – make absolutely certain that you can be seen.

Motorists should also drive with consideration for other road users and remember that cyclists are more vulnerable. They should give cyclists plenty of space as they may have to avoid hazards  and should look out for cyclists at junctions. Motorists should also take extra care near schools where there may be young cyclists.
